"Badass truck, thought it was a dude's!" is not a compliment.

I get variants of this constantly (including just this morning pulling into work) from well-meaning folks depending on what I'm driving, but the second part just isn't necessary. It says more about the speaker's assumptions than it does about my taste in vehicles. If you want me to go into more detail I can, but it's just not a compliment.

but... but a penis means better taste in cars! Didn't you know that your chosen method of transportation is directly correlated with your sexytime whatnots?

One of the few cases of "microaggression" that could be considered legitimate.

Actually this is probably one of the more innocuous ones I deal with.

I'll keep this in mind when complimenting your shiny, new, 'Murican, yellow-encased V8.

Oh yea, it's only gonna get better from here :P unless some n00b has no hearing and assumes it's a V6 and goes HURRDURR CHICK CAR

Well, you should probably just go with straight pipes to prevent that.

Like when a program manager referred to me as my mentor's "assistant", and knows full well I'm an engineer, yet doesn't make this hilarious joke about the 5 other new engineers with mentors for some reason... Enough to grind your gears, not enough to raise hell over.

I did tick a loudness box in the options, so we'll hear how nice that is out of the factory. Don't wanna be overcompensating too much ;)

Yeah, probably the right decision. You want to get right up next to the line between "badass chick" and "obnoxious a-hole (who just happens to be female)".

I really, really want to make my car a bit louder, but I also really, really don't want my neighbors to hate me. I leave at 7:00 am most mornings...

Looking forward to seeing what you chose. My girlfriend gets variations on this when she borrows my car as well. Drives her bonkers.

Speaker's assumptions, or observations? Can't really be surprised that others are surprised by something uncommon. Makes as much sense to blame their lying eyes as it does to blame the 97% of girls who don't share your hobby...or for me to be offended when girls giggle at finding out I'm a Heart and Stevie Nicks fan.

I knew one of these would pop up. Still not a compliment. You're free to think what you want about the demographics of Jeep drivers (even if you're wrong since there are seriously millions of female Jeep enthusiasts, and new Jeep buyership is about 50-50), but don't be surprised that I don't jump for joy when someone says my vehicle was so badass it could clearly only be driven by a man in their mind. As if it somehow hurts to even think that car ownership isn't a reflection of manliness so in order to pay me a compliment, it must have a man caveat. It's just not necessary.

Choosing to say that assumption aloud and expecting it to be a compliment is what I don't appreciate, but I get that it's subtle to some and most people mean well so that's why I made this PSA to help explain why it's not cool.

Also, blaming other girls for not being "cool enough" to change people's incorrect assumptions about Jeep enthusiasts is just as silly as blaming every straight male Jalop for not owning a Miata to help kill that stupid stereotype.

And as I'm sure you're aware, women are not all feminists and are very much capable of enforcing gender roles (internalized misogyny sucks real hard), but that doesn't make it OK. Seriously, Heart and Stevie Nicks rock and others have no business mocking you for appreciating female artists.

It's not an incorrect assumption that most girls don't go mudding in their Jeeps, unless they're also adding "and let's keep it that way!". Girls aren't "mocking me for appreciating female artists", they're surprised to encounter a guy who likes bands that appeal to mostly girls.

All the social engineering in the world is unlikely to convince large numbers of girls to get grimy under a car, and that's the reality of choice, not misogyny. The dogma that everything is a social construct requires incredible feats of cognitive dissonance...how about just being ok that you've picked a non mainstream hobby that happens to be far less mainstream for girls?

Something tells me you're not going to accept that it's just not a compliment no matter how many times I explain since you keep getting hung up on tangents. If that's the case, I have no desire to waste time trying to explain nicely over and over, and I'm definitely not going to bother with the rest of your cringe-inducing piles of flat-out wrong. You're entitled to your opinion and I'll leave it at that and wish you a good day.

I'm saying compliment vs. oppression is a false choice, sets you up to be pissed forever, and only benefits those who feed on identity politics. Not so great for those of us who don't want a perpetual culture war.
